Lake Mead, reservoir of the Hoover Dam, is one of the largest constructed lakes in the world, on the Arizona–Nevada border 25 miles (40 km) east of Las Vegas. Formed by the damming of the Colorado River, Lake Mead extends 115 miles upstream, is 1 to 10 miles wide, and has 550 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 229 square miles. It was named after Elwood Mead, commissioner of reclamation (1924–36).
Overview
Typical tours involve a sightseeing trip to the Hoover Dam followed by finding a beautiful beach to land the boat on. The tour can also be self-guided — guests are welcome to go anywhere on the lake.

- Take Hwy 93 towards Boulder City
- Left at Buchanan to stay on Hwy 93
- Left on Lakeshore Rd to Lake Mead
- Right turn after the ranger station
- Continue straight to the boat launch area
